Funeral Wreaths : Reflections on Power Relations in Thai Society

Abstract

This study aims to explore (1) the origins of the practice of sending funeral wreaths in Thai society and (2) the socio-political power dynamics through communication method and the symbols represented by funeral wreaths. This study employed qualitative research method, using document analysis and in-depth interviews with a specific group of informants: two monks, two wreath shop owners, one religious ceremony master at a temple, five funeral organizers, five politicians and government officials who present wreaths, and five general guests attending funerals, totaling 20 people. Interviews were the primary research tool. These interviews were then analyzed with the descriptive analytics method. The study found that (1) funeral wreaths are a Western cultural practice initially made for both auspicious and inauspicious occasions, adopted into Thai society during the reign of King Rama IV exclusively for funerals, replacing the traditional practice of honoring the dead with sandalwood flowers, incense, and candles. Initially, wreaths were used in the funerals of the upper class as a decorative item to match their status and later became widespread among the general populace. The early wreaths used in Thai funerals were simple, beautifully woven branches representing mourning and respect for the deceased, in contrast to the present day, where wreaths also signify power and status. (2) Writing messages and expressing condolences funerals wreaths, not only an important societal norms presented symbolically, but also indicates the giver's identity and his associates, as well as the political relation of the deceased’s family and the giver. Moreover, the implicit symbolism also provides political communication and election campaigning opportunities. Politicians participating in funerals can use this occasion to introduce themselves and their political parties.

การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา (1) ที่มาของการมอบพวงหรีดงานศพในสังคมไทย (2) บริบทความสัมพันธ์เชิงอำนาจของสังคมการเมือง ผ่านรูปแบบของกระบวนการสื่อสารและสัญญะที่ปรากฏอยู่บนพวงหรีดงานศพ งานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยการศึกษาวิจัยเอกสารและการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกด้วยการเลือกกลุ่มผู้ให้ข้อมูลหลักแบบเฉพาะเจาะจง คือ พระสงฆ์จำนวน 2 รูป ร้านจำหน่ายพวงหรีดจำนวน 2 คน พิธีกรทางศาสนาประจำวัดจำนวน 1 คน เจ้าภาพผู้จัดงานศพจำนวน 5 คน นักการเมืองและข้าราชการที่มอบพวงหรีดจำนวน 5 คน แขกทั่วไปที่มาร่วมงานศพจำนวน 5 คน รวมทั้งสิ้น 20 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัย คือ แบบสัมภาษณ์ เป็นการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงพรรณนา ผลการศึกษา พบว่า (1) พวงหรีด เป็นวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกที่ทำขึ้นเพื่อใช้ทั้งในงานมงคลและอวมงคล รับเข้ามาในสังคมไทยช่วงรัชกาลที่ 4 เพื่อใช้เฉพาะงานอวมงคลหรืองานศพเท่านั้นแทนที่การสักการะศพด้วยดอกไม้ธูปเทียน ช่วงแรกจะใช้ในงานศพของชนชั้นสูงเพื่อเป็นเครื่องตกแต่งให้งานศพสมฐานะและแพร่หลายสู่สามัญชนคนทั่วไป พวงหรีดที่ใช้ในงานศพไทยช่วงแรกยังเป็นเพียงกิ่งไม้ที่นำมาสานขัดกันให้ดูสวยงามใช้แทนความอาลัยแด่ผู้ที่จากไป ต่างจากในปัจจุบันที่พวงหรีดถูกแปรสภาพให้เป็นการแสดงถึงอำนาจและสถานะ (2) การเขียนข้อความและการแสดงความเห็นในพวงหรีดงานศพนอกจากเป็นเรื่องของธรรมเนียมสังคมที่สำคัญยังปรากฏอยู่ในเชิงสัญญะ พวงหรีดที่นำมามอบในงานศพบ่งบอกถึงตัวตนของผู้มอบและคณะผู้มอบ ความสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมการเมืองระหว่างผู้ตายครอบครัวผู้ตายกับผู้มอบพวงหรีด นอกจากนี้สัญญะโดยนัยยังเป็นโอกาสในการสื่อสารทางการเมืองและโฆษณาหาเสียง นักการเมืองที่มีส่วนร่วมในงานศพสามารถใช้โอกาสนี้ในการแนะนำตัวเองและพรรคการเมืองของตน
